“Handling people is the most important thing in officiating. You can have a good rules man but if he doesn’t use common sense he’s not a very good official as far as I’m concerned. The game belongs to the players and the coaches. We can help by not being overly technical in making calls. Some of the younger referees coming up have a tendency to be technicians. They’re always looking for a violation.”
